Chapter Thirteen

Seneca felt sick to her stomach and it wasn’t from the train ride to Dengarden. The magic sickness hadn’t gone away like Dr. Compton had thought it would, but it did seem to be lessening the closer they got to the Orlikov family estate. Daniel had been kind but a little impatient with her constant stops to visit the ladies’ room, but she would be darned if she’d be sick in public.

The train ride had been blessedly short. From the train station just outside the pocket subdivision, it had only taken a little over an hour by magical rail to get to the town where Dengarden was located. From the station, Daniel assured Seneca they could walk to the estate, so she agreed reluctantly, hoping that the fresh air would help her feelings of sickness.

Being back in the magical realm, especially in a quiet little town like Murrow, made Seneca feel more than a little homesick. If anyone in the town recognized her from all those years ago, no one mentioned it. And when Daniel took her into a small cafe for a cup of lemon and ginger tea, Seneca could swear that she’d been in the place before. It all felt so familiar, so much like revisiting a memory, that she had to shake her head to clear away the sensation.

“I swear I’ve never been here before,” she confessed to Daniel, “but I have the strangest sense of deja vu.”

Daniel nodded solemnly. “I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re getting a little emotional feedback from the binding spell. When I was in the Magical Police Academy, they cautioned us against using binding spells on prisoners because of the possible side effects. Magic sickness is just one—you can also experience phantom memories of the other person you’re bound to.”

“So, I’m likely experiencing Alistair’s memories,” Seneca guessed. “That feels all kinds of wrong.”

“It is. That’s why even the MPs don’t use binding spells. Your father, forgive me for saying, is kind of a jerk.”

Seneca couldn’t help but let out a little laugh. “That, I believe, is the understatement of the century.”

They continued on, walking the mile and half to Dengarden in relative peace. Once they reached the gate, Seneca felt much better. She could see a guard at the entrance to the gated estate. He didn’t question her approach, so she surmised that they must be expected.

“We’re here to see Vivienne Orlikov. She’s expecting us,” Seneca said, mustering up as much confidence as she could. She noticed the guard carried a very sturdy wand—not necessary for minor spells and magic, but useful for more heavy-handed magic. It made her feel just a little vulnerable. She regretted sending her coven off without her. She would have much preferred to have them with her, though she was fairly sure that even their combined abilities were no match for a maestrioso bully wizard.

The guard eyed them both carefully. “Who’s this?” he asked, pointing to Daniel.

“I’m Daniel Dawson, member of the Magical Police Force and
